Szara Kamienica is one of the most recognizable and historic buildings on Kraków’s Main Market Square, located at Rynek Główny 6. Its origins date back to the second half of the 13th century, though legend attributes its founding to King Casimir the Great. The building has undergone numerous reconstructions: it was expanded in the 14th century, merged with a neighboring townhouse in the 15th, and received a magnificent Renaissance portal in the 17th century. Szara Kamienica features a decorative attic, Gothic vaults, and Renaissance ceilings. Over the centuries, it was a residence for voivodes and magnates, hosted kings, served as a headquarters for uprisings and revolutionary governments, and witnessed key historical events, including the Kościuszko Insurrection and the Kraków Uprising. In the 19th century, the famous “Szarski i Syn” store operated here, and in the 20th century, it was the site of Kraków’s last public execution. Today, owned by the Grey House Foundation, Szara Kamienica is a vibrant place where various fields of life intersect: it houses prestigious institutions, a contemporary art gallery, a restaurant, and offers office and retail spaces for lease.
