Warszawska 12 is a historic urban villa in the center of Katowice, built in 1870 by Ignatz Grünfeld as his private residence. Originally designed in the neoclassical style, the building featured a compact form, gable roof, and rectangular window openings. In the 1930s, the villa underwent a major reconstruction by Marian Lalewicz, acquiring a modernist form and functionalist details – the skylight was raised, an entrance block was added, and the interior layout was changed. Over the decades, the building served various purposes, including housing a branch of Commerz Bank, Bank Rolny, Narodowy Bank Polski, Bank Śląski, the Rectorate of the Medical University of Silesia, and the Medical University Library. The interiors are organized around a three-storey hall with galleries supported by columns, and fragments of original floors, woodwork, and stucco decorations have been preserved. The property is a valuable example of adapting a historic villa for office and public use.
