About Skłodowskiej-Curie 28

Skłodowskiej-Curie 28 is one of the most recognizable buildings in Katowice, known as the "Drapacz Chmur" (Skyscraper). Constructed between 1929 and 1934, designed by Tadeusz Kozłowski with a steel frame by Stefan Bryła, it was the first high-rise of its kind in Poland and among the tallest in Europe at the time. The building has 17 residential storeys and an office section, featuring a distinctive pyramidal form, large windows, and balconies, with architecture reflecting modernism and functionalism. Initially, it housed tax offices, the treasury, the cadastral office, and apartments for administration employees. Some original interior features remain, such as stair railings, entrance doors, flooring, and wall sconces. The building is a symbol of interwar modern architecture and one of Katowice’s most important monuments.
